Join the Out of the Mattress Advisory Board
Out of the Mattress is financial education for immigrants, by immigrants. We help immigrants get past their fear of the U.S. financial system and learn to budget, save, and invest with confidence. Our 2025 Impact Report covers our first program year, when 84% of our 76 graduates opened their first high-yield savings or investment account. As we enter year two, we’re looking for advisors to guide our growth and amplify our impact.
The board’s role
The advisory board is a small group of trusted advisors whose counsel shapes OOTM’s strategy and operations. OOTM is fiscally sponsored by Build Up, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity that holds the legal and fiduciary responsibility for now. That means you advise with real influence, but without personal legal liability.
It’s also a ground-floor seat. As OOTM grows toward its own 501(c)(3), this board is the foundation of its future governance. The habits we build now are the ones a governing board stands on. You’ll help shape those habits from the beginning.
What we’re looking for
Our team is made up of people who believe in our mission, bringing good judgment and real-world nonprofit experience. A personal or professional tie to immigrant communities matters most to us. We’re especially eager to speak to advisors with expertise in financial services, fundraising, community organization, and nonprofit management, but the fit we care about first is your belief in the work and the perspective you bring to the table.
What we ask of you
Your first job is to help OOTM stay true to its mission and vision, grow sustainably, and develop strong programs. Concretely, that means:
- Advise and steer. Bring your judgment to OOTM’s direction, its growth, and its programs, and help us see further than we could on our own.
- Champion the mission. Be an advocate and ambassador for OOTM in your own circles and in the communities you’re tied into.
- Contribute, give or get. Board members make a meaningful annual contribution, given yourself or raised from others. We set the baseline together and talk it through privately, and it’s never meant to be a barrier to serving.
Beyond that shared baseline, we hope every advisor opens doors too: an introduction to someone who can fund the work, a gathering, an invitation. It’s some of the most useful help you can give, and we’ll make it easy.
Time and term
- Meetings. A monthly board meeting on Zoom of an hour each.
- Between meetings. The occasional call, email, or introduction.
- Term. A one-year commitment, April through March, renewable each spring.
